Ahead of the Modern Claims Awards 2024, Modern Insurance Magazine catches up with Mike Shallcross, Managing Director of MLA – kind sponsors of the Innovation of the Year Award.
Q. Hi Mike! Thanks so much for your time today. Let’s start by talking about MLA – what do you do, and what are your areas of specialism?
A. I’m Mike Shallcross, and I am the Managing Director of MLA. Our primary mission at MLA is to assist law firms to uphold justice by supplying expert witness reports that serve as pivotal and vital evidence in ongoing legal claims. With a distinguished reputation, we take pride in having one of the most extensive panels of experts in the UK. MLA are able to provide specialists that provide expert witness reports for Industrial disease, as well as the UK’s leading provider of charted surveyor reports.
Q. What’s your biggest personal achievement in your career to date, and what are you most proud of?
A. MLA was the first agency that was a Tier 2 to become a Tier 1 MedCo agency, and went on to win Medical Legal Provider of the Year two years running. Our biggest achievement is working with managers and staff to develop the housing disrepair reports, where we started from nothing to becoming the market leaders in the last 4 years.
Today, I am thrilled to declare that MLA stands as the foremost authority in the market, particularly renowned for our expertise in housing conditions, military claims, and industrial disease cases. The journey from MLA’s humble beginnings to leading a powerhouse in the legal arena has been a testament to dedication, perseverance, and the unwavering commitment from my team. I couldn’t be prouder of the collective achievements we’ve attained and the lasting mark we’ve made in the industry.

Q. MLA are Liverpool based, which is really fitting for this year’s Modern Claims Awards at The Rum Warehouse. What local sites and attractions would you recommend for those travelling to Liverpool for the event?
A. City Wine Bar + Kitchen is a place that a lot of the businesses in the Commercial District attend to have a relaxing drink on a Friday. It’s a lovely and friendly bar/restaurant situated on Old Hall Street.
The Puffin Rooms (also on Old Hall Street) is a really nice place to go if you are looking for a more classy evening. With a large selection of premium whiskey and cigars, the venue does not disappoint.
Q. What are you most looking forward to about Awards night, and why?
A. I’m looking forward to connecting with a lot of people in the industry. I love events like the Modern Claims Awards, as it’s nights like these which bring the best of the industry together in one place to congratulate and support one-another’s achievements. There’s a real sense of camaraderie and mutual respect, making it a truly memorable experience.
