Recent research in the RAC’s Report on Motoring found ‘for the first time ever, a majority of drivers (56%)…say the condition and maintenance of roads…was one of their top motoring concerns’. It comes as no surprise to Auto Windscreens, who’s top damage reason, by far, has been ‘stone’ since it began collating the data in 2016.
So far this year, ‘stone’ damage has made up 78% of Auto Windscreens’ glass claims, followed by ‘accidental’ at 7%, ‘weather’ at 5% and ‘vandalism’ at 3%.
Claire Church, Director of Service Delivery at Auto Windscreens, said: “Reasons for damage can be subjective from a customer’s point of view, but we can assume ‘stone’ damage is caused by the state of our roads. We introduced ‘pothole’ as a new reason in 2019/2020, and we’re seeing this increase year on year. If we look at this together with ‘stone’ damage, this equates to over four fifths of our glass claims this year which could be attributed to the current conditions of the roads.
“We recommend drivers make a mental note of all potholes and road damage on their journeys and report them online. It’s a good idea to keep speeds down, so when they can’t be avoided, you run less risk of damaging your vehicle.”
