Vehicle technology has evolved rapidly over the past decade, but one area continues to reshape the motor claims landscape faster than many insurers fully appreciate: Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS).

Once limited to premium vehicles, ADAS technology is now standard across most styles of new vehicle manufactured. Features such as lane departure warning, autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, traffic sign recognition, and collision avoidance systems all rely on cameras, sensors, and radar units positioned throughout the vehicle, many of which are directly connected to the windscreen.

For insurers, this shift has fundamentally changed what was once considered a straightforward repair process.

A windscreen replacement today is no longer simply a glass replacement. In many modern vehicles, it also requires precise ADAS recalibration to ensure critical safety systems continue to function in accordance with manufacturer specifications. Without correct calibration, vehicle safety systems may not perform as intended, creating potential safety, compliance, and liability risks.

The challenge facing the industry is scale.

The number of ADAS-equipped vehicles entering the market continues to grow significantly year-on-year, while vehicle technology itself is becoming increasingly sophisticated. At the same time, many insurers are still adapting operationally to the impact this complexity is having on claims costs, repair times, customer expectations, and supply chain capability.

ADAS recalibration introduces several new pressures into the claims journey.

Firstly, there is the technical requirement. Calibration procedures differ between manufacturers and even between vehicle models. Some vehicles require static calibration using specialist equipment in controlled workshop environments, while others require dynamic calibration involving specific road-testing conditions. This places increasing importance on technician competency, ongoing training, equipment investment, and adherence to manufacturer repair methods.

Secondly, there is the operational impact. Calibration extends repair times, increases workshop requirements, and creates additional dependencies within the supply chain. If the correct equipment, environment, or technical expertise is unavailable, vehicle off-road time can increase significantly.

Thirdly, there is the financial impact. Modern repairs now involve not only parts and labour but also software, diagnostics, calibration events, and specialist technical processes. As vehicle technology advances, claims inflation is no longer being driven solely by material costs, it is increasingly being driven by repair complexity.

For insurers, the implications extend beyond indemnity spend.

Customer expectations continue to evolve rapidly. Policyholders expect fast, seamless repair experiences while also assuming their vehicle will be returned fully restored to manufacturer safety standards. Balancing customer satisfaction with repair quality and cost control is becoming increasingly challenging.

The insurers best positioned for the future will be those that proactively strengthen relationships with technically capable repair partners and invest in greater visibility across the repair journey.
